I use a number of different types of racking systems to house my reptiles including my original home made melamine racks using lidded Really Useful Boxes, home made modular aluminium framed racks using lidless Really Useful Boxes and IKEA Komplement boxes and commercially available, purpose built reptile racks from Vision Products (www.visionproducts.us).

Melamine racks are a great way to start with as they are cheap, easy to build and they retain heat well. However, they are very heavy and therefore far from ideal if you need to move them and to ensure there are no issues with condensation swelling the melamine, mine are lidded which makes them a lot less convenient at feeding and watering time. They are also not modular so you are tied into your configuration for the life of the rack unless you are prepared to perform some robust DIY!

Aluminium racks are the way to go if you are looking for a lightweight, modular and professional quality lidless rack. They are easy to move, they can be broken down into individual shelves and you can start off with just a few levels and grow your rack as your collection grows plus the lidless design makes feeding and watering time a doddle. As they are aluminium framed, they do not hold heat well so are best used in a dedicated room with additional ambient heating such as an oil filled radiator with a fan to even out the room temperature.

I originally acquired a Vision V60 rack to house my hatchling Royal Pythons in 2009 and when the opportunity arose to obtain some used Vision V35 growing on racks, I didn't hesitate. Although the racks have plastic shelves and heat cables rather than mats like my home made racks, they are well made and using some additional ambient heating, do a great job at a relatively low cost per tub.
