18/07/11 Clutch #3 hatched yesterday, Yellowbelly x Yellowbelly, five eggs and two slugs, one egg went bad and on opening was found to be infertile. The rest clearly knew the correct odds:
I got 1:0 Ivory, 0:2 Yellowbelly and 1:0 normal.
16/07/11 Clutch #2 is out, several single gene males to a normal, eight eggs and three slugs but three of the eggs went bad and on opening, two were infertile but the third contained a curled up embryo about 1cm across which was a shame. It looks like the Cinnamon male did the deed:
I got 1:2 Cinnamons and 1:1 normals so I'm not unhappy but given the dam was well over three kilos, I would have preferred a few more viable eggs.
11/07/11 Fantastic news! After extensive research with a number of the top north American breeders, it looks like these could be Super Pastel Faders! The dam has been confirmed by her breeder as a first generation offspring from a wild caught Blonde type Pastel and as my hatchlings bear no resemblance to "normal" Super Pastels due to their intensely faded heads and blushing, I'm almost certain that they're all displaying the Fader gene...! As a result, they are probably all keepers now, I just think I struck lucky not only on the odds of getting three Super Pastels from the clutch, but also how stunning they all are.
Here are some pics I took this morning of female 3, hatched just three days ago. I'm still awaiting some further feedback from a well known north American breeder but going by his pictures compared to these below, I believe she may well be a Super Duper Pastel:
Thanks for looking and I'll post more pics once they've all shed.
10/07/11 All three are now out and I'm amazed how different they all are in pattern, colour and blushing. The bleed of the white of the head into the ocular stripe suggests the possible presence of the Fader gene and they look unlike anything I've seen before:
Female 1 66g:
Female 2 64g:
Female 3 44g:
You've got to love those funky heads haven't you?! Unfortunately, I didn't manage to hit the male I was after but I reckon female 3 has to be a keeper if only to watch how that insane blushing develops....!
08/07/11 One of the three stunners is now out and the other two look like they're getting ready. So the Lemon Blast is the sire with three Super Pastels from the clutch:
I'm really pleased to get three of these from one clutch, especially looking this good! The one on the right is noticeably smaller than the others but it looks a bit more blushed, I'll post a comparison pic once they're all out which will hopefully be very soon.
07/07/11 A few nice heads poking out today and I couldn't resist the temptation to check what's in there....! It looks like either the Lemon Blast or the Fire was the sire and what a sire, I've got three like this from seven eggs:
More pics as they emerge....
06/07/11 Day 56 for clutch #1 and as I was checking them earlier today, a number of them moved so I couldn't resist a quick snip:
This one looks interesting:
The dam was a Pastel and there are four possible sires, Lemon Blast, Red Axanthic, Fire and Mojave. I can't see anything with Pinstripe in and there are at least three different morphs so unless it's a split clutch, it looks like the Red Axanthic didn't do the business for me. I'll update the blog once I know what's what.
